As you might have heard, the Belgian Government is modifying the dismissal rules for white collar workers (employees) for 2014.

In this highly interactive session, Sophie Maes from Claeys & Engels brilliantly explained the new measures that will enter into force as of the 1 January 2014. The changes will mainly impact the notice periods that will be considerably shorter, both in case of dismissal from the employer or resignation from the employee.

Although the new system is decidedly more complex than the current one, and will require intricate calculations as well as cause some potential migraines for employers, it does all seem to be for an honourable cause: to increase employees’ mobility. The government hopes to encourage companies to hire more people by alleviating the pecuniary burden that presently comes with employees ‘dismissal in Belgium.
